Umbrella Arts Gallery presents photographer Rocio Segura’s debut solo NYC exhibition: 2 Projects: ‘Body Craft’/’When We Dream…’

THE EXHIBITION:

Rocio Segura is bringing her distinctive style to New York City! The photographer’s debut solo NYC exhibition, curated by Harvey Stein, will take place this April at Umbrella Arts Gallery in the East Village. Between April 4^th and 28^th, photography aficionados and casual browsers alike will have the opportunity to soak up her striking work in the form of two diverse projects: ‘Body Craft’/’When We Dream…’

‘Body Craft’, six portraits of tattooed subjects in a range of shapes and sizes, is a project in which Segura has invested herself heavily. Finding inspiration in Richard Avedon’s monochrome portraiture, she explains how her work brings to life  the inked forms painstakingly drawn on her subjects: “I like to show their personalities through their expressions, poses and, of course, tattoos.”

‘When We Dream…’, on the other hand, explores the concept of the deep subconscious. On the background for the vibrant project, Segura states that “dreams can sometimes be taboo – the mental realities represented transcend my own personal experiences.” Indeed, the colorful pieces tackle the notion that sleep brings to life our utmost hidden fears and desires: lust, jealousy, narcissism and falling. The result is twenty intricate photographs that all of us can relate to.

THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Rocio Segura graduated with a Master of Professional Studies in Digital Photography from the School of Visual Arts in 2011, prior to which she was a student at Madrid’s prestigious San Pablo CEU University. She has held numerous group and solo exhibitions in countries as diverse as the U.S., Italy and her native Spain.

More recently, Segura photographed and art directed Carolina Herrera, Samsung and Aquarius’ ‘The Future of your Brand’ project featuring a slew of young & talented creative.

Segura’s work has also been featured in a range of publications including Vice and AV Magazine, Spain.
